How to Read a Medicine Label: What Each Section Tells You

The label on a medicine pack holds important information. Knowing where to look helps you use medicines more safely.

Name and strength

You will see the brand name, the generic (salt) name and the strength, such as 500 mg. Two brands can contain the same generic ingredient, so avoid taking both together without advice.

Dosage form and pack size

This tells you whether it is a tablet, syrup, cream or injection, and how many units are in the pack.

Manufacturing and expiry dates

Never use a medicine after its expiry date.

Storage and warnings

Follow the storage advice and read the warnings about pregnancy, allergies and other medicines.

Ask when unsure

If anything is unclear, ask your pharmacist or doctor before using the medicine.
